Department of Mass Communication and Media

The Department of Mass Communication and Media at UOG is distinctively interdisciplinary and international in its outlook, providing an innovative and exciting learning environment for the ambitious students. Most of the training institutions in Mass Communication and Media are situated in major cities. Young people, who live in smaller towns and are interested in pursuing a career in this field, will now have an excellent institution close to their home to join. It is, particularly, ideal for female students, who do not want to live in big cities, and far away from their home. The academic programmes offered by the Department of Mass Communication and Media will include practical applications in electronic, print and web publishing. The campus will have an FM Radio Station, a TV Studio, a Printing Press and computer labs with web access for all the students to practice. The students will start to work on these media from the very first semester.

The students will work with the rural and urban communities around the University and involve communities in all their programmes. The course will inculcate democratic values, professionalism and a yearning to serve people among the students, as well as the communities they will serve. In addition to more traditional learning and teaching, includeing lectures and small group tutorials, the students will also participate in practical sessions and workshops as well as online learning. We use a variety of forms of assessment appropriate for different subjects across the programme; these include: exam, media practice, seminars contribution, group project and presentations, online contribution, web designing, and critical film reviews. The proportion of the course work is approximately 60:40. However, it is largely determined by your choice of modules in each year.

Future Prospects

Career prospects of the students graduating from the Department of Mass Communication and Media are outstanding. In a time of rapid technological changes, media practitioners and researchers need to be flexible in their approach and career objectives. In this respect, our graduates will be equipped with identifiable and excellent transferable communication skills, essential for a very wide range of careers. Many of these are actually assessed as part of the programme, and include: argument, persuasion, collaborations peaking to and writing for different audience, time management, and confidence in public speaking, information technology and new media.
