with any subjects.
The core
objective of this programme is to provide professional,
multi-disciplinary, career-oriented education, coupled with a
comprehensive liberal arts education and a global perspective, to the
students. The programme develops the students’ intellectual, aesthetic,
analytical and technological abilities, integrating theory with
traditional and digital hands-on application. It is structured to
provide the students with the multi-disciplinary skills needed to meet
the industry’s demands. Examples of surfaces decorated and changed by
the textile/surface designer are fabric, glass, metal, wood, rubber,
porcelain, paper, plastic and fibreglass.
Examples of
techniques used by the textile/surface/product designer are airbrushing,
antiquing, batiking, beading, bleaching, bogolanfini, burn out, CAD,
collage, combing decoupages, devoré, digitalising, discharging,
dragging, dyeing, embossing, embroidering, etching, faux painting, foil
application, glazing, glittering, graining, ikat, illusionary painting,
japanning, jacquard, knitting, lacquering, layering, lining, mapping,
marbling, montage, mottling, patina finishing, painting, photographing,
pouncing, porphyry, printing, quilting, ragging, resisting, rolling,
rubbing, salting, sanding, scumbling, simulating, speckling, sponging,
staining, stamping, striating, stencilling, stippling, taping, tinting,
transferring, trompel’oeil, underscoring, varnishing, war resist,
weaving, wrapping, xeroxing, and zhostovo.

Textile/Surface
Design: Styles and Sources

lecture and 2 studio hours per week)
The course
offers an introduction to the styles, vocabulary and research methods
necessary for creating original textile/surface designs. Through
image-based lectures, discussions, museum visits, design projects and
presentation critiques, the students explore themes in fashion and the
applied arts that will serve as a foundation for their future design
work.

Studio Practices
3 credits (6
studio hours per week)
The students
create painted designs and patterns for fashion fabrics appropriate for
apparel using opaque watercolour (gouache). The emphasis is on
developing original design concepts and meeting the industry’s
standards.

Nature Studies
1.5 credits (3
studio hours per week)
The course used
the study of design in nature as a source of inspiration for textile
design. The students analyse growth and structure of plants and other
forms of nature, using live flowers and marine life as models for
drawing and painting in representational techniques.

CAD Principles:
Textile Design
1.5 credits (3
studio hours per week)
The course
introduces the fundamentals of computer aided textile design. The
students use current, off-the-shelf graphics software (Adobe Illustrator
and Photoshop) to produce original designs, croquis and repeat layouts,
coordinates, and colour combinations while exploring colour palettes,
scale and proportion. Web resources, scanning, file management and
printing options are explained, and presentation skills are emphasised.

Woven Design

The course
offers an introduction to creating woven fabrics on a table handloom.
The students learn basic weaving techniques, drafting of weaves on
paper, and the interrelation of yarns, colour and weave structure in a
fabric design.

Accessory Sketching
2.5 credits (1
lecture and 3 studio hours per week)
The students are
introduced to the concept of three-dimensional sketching and how it
relates to the design of accessories. Concentrating on design detail,
they learn to sketch the basic shapes in footwear, handbags, personal
leather goods, belts, etc.

Printed Fabrics

studio hours per week)
The students
create original painted designs for printed fashion fabrics marketable
for women’s, men’s and children’s wear. Professional methods of
designing patterns, repeats and colour combinations are explored, using
transparent watercolour (dyes) and mixed media.

Advanced Nature
Studies

studio hours per week)
The courses is
based on painting of flowers and other nature forms, with continued
emphasis on observation, selection of colour, structure and design
patterns. The students use nature forms as a basis for stylised
compositions in line and colour.

Screen Printing

In this course,
designs in repeats are printed on various fabrics in actual workshop
surroundings. The emphasis is on screen printing techniques and design
with screens.

This course is
based on continued creative and experimental application of techniques
learned in Semester 3 Course TX-WD 366. Four-harness table looms are
used to explore compound weave patterns and texture.

In this course,
yarn-dyed patterns are created using a CAD programme for woven design.
The students learn to create checks, plaids, stripes and textured
patterns for apparel and home furnishings. Moreover, colour ways and
coordinates are also explored.

based on a general study of textile materials with an emphasis on the

repeats, colour ways and coordinates targeting specific markets. The
emphasis is on a creative use of the software, on imparting awareness

the students learn the fundamental design aspects and technical
requirements appropriate for decorative fabrics. Large-scale layouts,
research sources and current trending information are used to create
original designs for the market.

standard textile visualising 3D software U4ia, the students experience
the real world working environment and the advanced methods to produce
world class designs.

learn the research, design and technical skills needed to create
textiles for the apparel and home furnishing markets. The emphasis is on
research methods and experimentation with materials, techniques and
colour to create textural effects using a variety of mixed media.

explore a variety of screen making and imaging techniques in order to
have an understanding of aesthetic and experimental printing methods.
The emphasis is on surface effects, techniques, layering and colour,
because they relate to design for fabric. The students present a
professional portfolio of their work at the end of the semester.

Home Fashion Accessory-II

Using 3D
software, this accelerated course introduces the various areas of
accessory design, including handbags, gloves, shoes, hats, belts, soft
textile toys, etc. The students learn to draw and render current
lighting and textures available in 3D visualisations.

Surface Design:
Paper Products

studio hours per week)
Learning to
design products for tabletop, the students produce print designs,
shopping bags, playing cards, tissue boxes, etc. The uniqueness of
designing for paper products is also emphasised in the course.

Advanced Woven
Design
2 credits
This course
introduces the students to the research, development and creation of
complex, multi-shaft woven structures. Projects include an in-depth
exploration of woven structures and creation of woven design collections
based on the market trends.

Materials Technology

Processes in the
development of leathers, reptiles, plastics and other textiles are
analysed in this course. The emphasis is on their function and
utilisation for handbags, footwear and other related accessories.

In this course,
the basic concepts of footwear design are introduced to the students.
Moreover, the history and types of footwear are discussed. The students
learn skills of patternmaking, sewing, construction and finishing for
closed shoes. The skills to design and produce handbags are also taught
in this course. The students become familiar with patternmaking
techniques, machinery and equipment, and the different styles in handbag
design. They learn how to translate original concepts into finished
products. The students also learn the aspects of athletic footwear to
design and construct original products.

Print Design II: U4ia Software
3 credits
Using the best
textile visualising 3D software, U4ia, the students learn the real world
working environment and the advanced methods to produce world class
designs.

Direct Dye
Sublimation Printing
2 credits
The students
learn the latest technology of direct dye sublimation printing. They
make short runs of printed fabrics or test their design mock ups in the
real world environment by making home fashion products and sending them
to their clients for approval.

Portfolio
Development
3 credits (1
lecture and 4 studio hours per week)
Using elements
of projects of their seniors, the students develop portfolios by working
with black line sketches, and Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.
Spec sheets, concept pages and mood boards are used for professional
presentation.
