Fatima Jinnah College for Women

Fatima Jinnah College for Women, Fawara Chowk, Gujrat, has the distinction of being the first institution to start education at the graduation level for women between Lahore and Rawalpindi. Established in 1949 as girls’ section of Zamindar College, it became an independent college on 21 March 1951 when Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah performed its inauguration ceremony. It was then named as Fatima Jinnah College. The Punjab Government took over its control in 1952 and named it as Government College for Women, but it was again renamed as the Fatima Jinnah College for Women, Fawara Chowk, Gujrat, in 2003.

One of the oldest colleges in the area, the institution has rendered meritorious and commendable services for women’s education. The college is housed in two beautiful buildings in the centre of the Gujrat city. On one side is a classical building (the Academic Block), Kidharnath Mahal which reminds of the grandeur of eastern civilization; whereas, the other building, the Science Block, is the masterpiece of modern architecture.

More than 3,200 students are currently enrolled in Fatima Jinnah College for Women. The college has a huge library containing more than 25,000 books on various subjects, and it serves the research needs of the students as well as visiting scholars. A recently-completed building houses a spacious and modern computer lab, a multi-purpose hall and two classrooms. In addition, it is only college in the city that provides residential facility to the students.

Fatima Jinnah College for Women has won laurels in co-curricular activities. Its students have brought trophies and won prizes in debates, declamation contests and quiz programmes in Inter Collegiate competitions. In sports as well, it has had an excellent record.
