Regional conflicts have become global challenges after the
demise of the Cold War. Palestine and Kashmir are disputed
territories. It has become imperative to settle these disputes
as soon as possible. Regional disputes caused and promoted
terrorism. Regional forces can help the United Nations to
settle these disputes. Al-Qaida is expanding in Arab and non
Arab nations. This was stated by the French Ambassador, His
Excellency Daniel Jouannueau while addressing the students and
faculty of the University of Gujrat.
The debate was arranged by the UOG administration to help
understand the role and perception of global forces on any
socio-political and global issue. Vice Chancellor University of
Gujrat Prof Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin opened the debate and
remarked on the occasion that France is the European nation with
bold and humanitarian stance on different world issues. He
appreciated the role of French in containing the Iraq Wars. The
VC appreciated the role of French Government promoting higher
education in Pakistan. He urged the ambassador to continue help
promoting higher education in the country.
Mr. Daniel while delivering his speech highlighted the
Pak-French historical relations. He quoted unanimity of stance
of both the nations on different world affairs. He said that he
was greatly impressed by visiting the campus and interacting
with the students. Mr.
Jouannueau appreciated the developing trend of democratic values
in Pakistan. He said that France attaches great significance for
help promoting Pakistan, rule of law and democracy. France
helped Pakistan developing national institutions even in
dictatorial regimes. Mr Jouannueau appreciated Pakistan Army and
the people of Pakistan for their great contribution in fighting
against terrorism. Mr. Jouannueau while explaining stance of
French government on "veil in France" said that France is a
secular state. Everybody is free there to practice his or her
religion. France respects Islamic teachings and values. In
France, he remarked is more research worked on Islamic
principles and teachings. He briefed about the Islamic concept
for ‘Hijab’ and tradition of ‘veil’. He said that veil is
allowed in France but discouraged for school girls. Mr.
Jouannueau said that security reason is another factor for
banning veil in schools. He explained other Islamic traditions
freely practiced in France. After his lecture students asked
various questions regarding French stance on global and domestic
issues. While responding to a question on discriminatory
attitude of the French Government of the civil nuclear treaty
with India, Mr. Jouannueau said that the agreement has been
reached after 10 years of process of scrutiny and thoughts.
Pakistan can also move for French cooperation in this regard he
added. To another
student’s query Mr. Jouannueau said that there is no Islam
phobia in France. Sometimes media misperceptions and misreporting
generate the concept.
