"Media
Playing Role of Watchdog"
State
Institution has become accountable : Maiza Hameed
State institutions
in Pakistan have started developing rapidly. Every department has
become accountable to the nation. Media too has started playing its
role of watchdog. Vote is a power in democratic system. People have
become conscious of their rights. Youth is potent to direct Pakistan
on the road of progress and prosperity. Academic and research
facilities at the University of Gujrat are at par with the developed
private institutions in Pakistan and abroad. Female students should
behave more responsibly so that after graduating could lead to more
than half of population. This was said by the MPA (PML-N) Maiza Hameed
while addressing a seminar as “Youth Action for Democracy and Peace
Building in Campuses” in collaboration with NED and Bargad here at
Hafiz Hayat Campus.
While addressing his
presidential address, the Registrar M. Akram Bhatti stated that higher
centers of learning can play a key role in the promotion of peace and
democratic values. University of Gujrat in collaboration with Bargad and
others will try to promote peace strategies and democracy.
Regional Director
National Endowment for Democracy (South Asia) Nelson Lee while
addressing the seminar stressed the freedom of expression and basic
human rights for promoting democracy. He said that the majority rule is
more durable in a state. Mr. Lee stressed the need for freedom of
expression which ultimately promote democratic thought and practices. He
opined that there is urge and determination for democracy in the
educated people of Pakistan.
Renowned expert in
Political Studies, Iqbal Haider Butt explained the phenomena of
democracy in the context of human behaviors. He claimed in clear terms
that democracy is not election politics but the human behavior. He
regretfully remarked that in Pakistan democracy is only linked to the
system of government. People in Pakistan are not aware of all democratic
dimensions of human life and behaviors. He said that the centre of
higher learning in Pakistan can viably promote democratic and political
thoughts. He appreciated the social agenda of the UOG and hoped that it
will cooperate with Bargad in similar efforts. Additional Director
External Linkages & Cooperation Shahid Minahs while addressing the
students explained the fundamental philosophy of democracy. He explained
various strategies for promoting democratic values in the campuses of
Pakistan. He remarked that the UOG is a unique campus which has tried to
evolve a strategy of formulating the Students Counsel to inculcate the
peace and democratic values among the students. He hoped that this
tactic will help in strengthening the democratic norms at grass root
level. Mr. Shahid said that the UOG has framed the constitution of the
Student Counsel in a way which will help promoting not only leadership
qualities but tendencies of tolerance, accommodation and awareness of
public problems. Shahid Minahs also presented a campus as role model of
democracy having all its departments as public institutions. Mr. Shahid
said that the environment of the campus of UOG is normally based on
democratic values serving as training camp of democracy. In the end, the
Executive Director Bargad, Ms Sabiha Thanked the Vice Chancellor,
Associate Director, Social Sciences, Dr. Fouzia Maqsood and Shahid
Minhas for supporting Bargad and NED to conduct such activities.
