"Department of Environmental Sciences, UOG is Celebrating World Environment Day 2010

Human behavior is considered to be an important driving force in various management activities. It has been noticed that our attitude is mainly responsible for environmental degradation. Water and other natural resources like air, soil, and natural habitats are wasted just because of their availability and these resources are considered to be as priceless resources. However, this myth has posed higher costs to humans. Our routine activities which affect our environment include wastage of pure water during bathing, air pollution due to bad maintenance of our vehicles, discharge of wastewater into natural water bodies, throwing solid waste outside of our homes, leaving rooms without switching off lights and electricity appliances etc. Resultantly, human attitudes can be held responsible for environmental degradation. These attitudes arise due to unawareness and illiteracy of people. Pakistan is highly vulnerable due to many critical environmental challenges. These challenges can be addresses by increasing awareness about the importance of natural resources among various masses of our society.

The Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Gujrat is celebrating World Environment Day (WED)’2010 on June 09, 2010 to cater aforementioned environmental challenges. WED themes Many Species: One Planet: One Future. The department has planned awareness initiatives by Essay Competition “Green Habits: A Way to Sustainable Environment”. Besides these competitions, a seminar regarding the theme of the WED’2010 will be arranged. These activities will highlighten various aspects of living and non living environment.
