Physics Department Holds Workshop on Nanotechnology

Integrating research findings in basic sciences gives more avenues of knowledge. Nanotechnology is an outcome of research in basic sciences. It can result in unlimited and multidimensional human development, in diverse fields. Nanotechnology is a field which result applied aspects of different phenomena of sciences in more beneficial and enterprising way. This technology will enshrine the future of human civilization with a technological revolution. Pakistan's youth is pretty vibrant and mentally fertile. If directed towards the suitable environment of research, it can excel in the field of nanotechnology like nuclear sciences in Pakistan. To direct youth potential on scientific research, a determined political will is direly needed. If leadership in Pakistan persuade the academics towards research, in the fields like nanotechnology, our researchers in Pakistan can transform the country into an agriculturally viable and industrially strong nation.

These views were shared by the chairman National Communication of Nano Sciences and Technology Prof Dr NM Butt in a one-day workshop on Nanotechnology here the other day at HH Campus University of Gujrat. The workshop was organized by the department of Physics and coordinated by its HOD Prof Dr Abdul Majid Sandhu.

While inaugurating the workshop, The Registrar Mr Muhammad Akram Bhatti Opined that seminars and workshops on modern scientific subjects, should be integral academic activities at the centers of higher learning. He said that the debate of scientific subjects inculcate scientific attitudes in the minds of students and the faculty. He appreciated the Higher Education role in promoting scientific debates on  modern subjects, especially in the universities. He offered his cooperation from the forum of his campus in promoting scientific research on modern subjects.

Earlier, while introducing the significance of the workshop, Head of Department of Physics Dr Abdul Majeed Sandhu said that the department has taken the initiative to organize a workshop on this modern subject in accordance with the VC’s research ambitions. He thanked the HEC for its support on initiating debate on applied subjects of the modern sciences. He termed faculty and students at the campus very fortunate to learn nanotechnology from an eminent national scientist. He highlighted the contributions of Dr NM Butt and paid homage to the landmark and memorable scientific services rendered by Mr Butt. Dr Sandhu while highlighting the significance of Nanotechnology said that the innovations at the intersection of medicine, engineering, biotechnology, physical and information technology are spurring research and the transfer of technology. He said that the basic research in nanosciences is rapidly producing commercially viable products. Government and industries across the globe are staking their claims by investing billions of dollars and euros on research.

Dr NM Butt, first of all highlighted the significance of the subject. He explained the research work being conducted in the field, across the globe. He said that all the developed countries are very serious in investing capital for making the sciences more proficient for the betterment of the human kind. He explained the expected outcome of nanotechnology in the field of agricultural, environment and aerospace. He said that huge amount of capital is being invested in the applied fields of nanotechnology like nano-medicine and nano-engineering. He quoted the research work on nanosciences being conducted in the MIT University of the United States. He also explained the developments in nanosciences at different departments of the country. He expressed his hope in over-coming the crises in the energy sector of Pakistan. After the lecture Introduction to Nanotechnology by Prof NM Butt, Dr Khalid Alamgir from National Institute Vacuum Sciences and Technology Islamabad, gave a detailed briefing on Physics and Fundamental Concepts of Nanotechnology. Third session was addressed by Prof Dr Saadat Anwar Siddiqui from the Centre for Solid State Physics on “Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructure”. Last session of the workshop was addressed Dr Tajammal Hussain Director Center for Nano Sciences, National Center for Physics, Islamabad. He threw light on the concepts of “Nano materials synthesis procedures and their applications in industries as nano catalysts. It is worth mentioning here that students and the faculty at Physics Department questioned the worthy speakers exhaustively after each session. Faculty of basics sciences of the campus also shared their ideas with the guest speakers. The faculty thanked Dr Majid for arranging such an opportunity of learning from the learned speakers. The workshop was shared through the video conferencing by the Mehran University of Engineering Jamshoro, Virtual University of Pakistan, and the Higher Education commission of Islamabad.
