Seminar on Translation and Transcreation at English Department

 " Tariq Masood Qasmi, Amjad Islam Amjad attends as Chief Guest and Guest of Honor

       

Languages served greatly bringing closer different civilizations. Translations helped introducing ideas thoughts and philosophies among the masses of different areas. The Arabs translated the western thoughts and gave the community a forum of debate which promoted knowledge in diverse fields. Urdu is a third bigger spoken language in the world. However its script has been facing many challenges. These views were shared by a renowned poet and literati Amjad Islam Amjad while addressing in a seminar on “Translation and Transcreation” organized by the English Department here at Hafiz Hayat Campus the other day.

 

The seminar was organized to equip the students of English department about the translation and transcreation techniques. Translation of the poetry of Amjad Islam Amjad by Tariq Masood Qasmi was taken as resource material for imparting skills to the students. Mr Tariq Masood Qasmi was chief guest while Amjad Islam Amjad attended the seminar as Guest of Honor.  Registrar, Muhammad Akram Bhatti presided over the seminar proceedings. While thanking the guests for their arrival at Hafiz Hayat Campus, Muhammad Akram Bhatti said that languages has always contributed to human kind in promoting thoughts and culture. He offered the forum of his campus for promoting different languages in translation, trans-creation and other important aspects of the modern languages.

 

Amjad Islam Amjad was of the view that English Language has been the imperative source of academic learning. Special care must be ensured to contain its effects on indigenous socio-culture environment. He said that mother language facilitates learning process of children and juvenile. They must be provided opportunity learning basic education in their native languages.

 

Chief Guest Tariq Masood Qasmi while addressing the students explained the reasons behind the selection of Amjad’s poetry for translation. He said that familiarity of both the languages is necessary for translation. Mr. Qasmi said that transcreation makes the translation more effective, communicative and understandable. Sound background knowledge of the cultures of population of both the languages is a prerequisite for the translation. He explained different technical aspects regarding the translation and transcreation of English and Urdu. He explained the students various dimensions of converting thoughts and meanings of the meaning of the languages to be translated. He termed Amjad’s poetry full of indigenous cultural indicators, norms, values, traditions, concepts and philosophies. Mr. Qasmi narrated his friendship history with Prof Mumtaz Hussain. Mr Qasmi said that he is a true lover of literature. He said that Mr Mumtaz was always found on fore fronts of the activities promoting literatures of English, Urdu and even Punjabi.
