The Department of Graphic Design has been established to cater to the increasing need of producing skilled designers. Considering the constantly increasing importance of graphic design, the students are trained to meet the merging demands of the market. Graphic design as an activity and a profession is on the edge of a challenging future. Ecological, ethical, economic and social concerns demand their appropriate integration with design’s traditional focus on aesthetics, form and functional utility.

Achieving this comprehensive goal is becoming more and more dependent on the way in which designers are able to conceive and develop responsible, appropriate and exciting solutions to the many and contemporary graphic design issues. The dynamic nature of this subject demands an inter-disciplinary approach that transcends the traditional design disciplines. Such an approach requires the education of students who can meet the challenge of being flexible.

      • Department of Environmental Science

Over the last few decades, environmental agro-ecology of Pakistan has changed dramatically due to undesired cutting of forests and replacement of small farms by industries. Drastic increase in vehicles and lack of attention to their fitness by the owners has added to environmental pollution. Because of mismanagement, thousands of tones of wastes and sewerage water is polluting under and over ground water bodies. Animals and factory farms produce are also contributing to water and air pollution. Human and livestock waste is also not treated and is dumped into pits and onto the land. Manure emits health-threatening quantities of toxic gases into the air as it decomposes. Spills and runoff of manure from factory farms can destroy rivers, and contaminate downstream life and human drinking water supplies.

Universities are considered the hub of research and higher learning. Currently, only a few institutions of higher education offer programmes in environmental studies in upper Punjab. Keeping in view the importance and impact of Environmental Science on the society, UOG has started BS (Hons) programme in this subject.

    • Faculty of Social Sciences

Social sciences today have spread into more and more specialised disciplines, which deal with different aspects of social life of the people in a society. The compartmentalisation of social sciences into various disciplines does not, however, negate the fundamental characteristics that it deals with social facts in whatever context we may study them. What makes the modern social sciences different is the method of discovering facts and figures. In spite of practical difficulties faced by social scientists in maintaining objectivity in the collection of facts, the coherence of social phenomenon and the profound unity of social sciences have never been seriously doubted.

Developing nations such as Pakistan are making their utmost effort to modernise themselves in order to achieve dynamic social institutions that are capable of solving their complex and diversified problems. Development, therefore, both economic and social, has become a keyword in the community of developing nations in the present era. It is not only a process of change, but it also signifies the plans and policies of government as well as other business and commercial institutions to find ways and means for satisfying the rising expectations of the people.

In Pakistan, there is a dire need of diverting the efforts of development on scientific lines, which means a concrete and deliberate emphasis on rational process of working in human organisations and manipulation of resources towards the attainment of desirable goals. The Faculty of Social Sciences at UOG has designed its academic programmes keeping in view this need.

    • Nawaz Sharif Medical College

The University of Gujrat, the Rachna College of Engineering and Technology, Gujranwala, and the Gujranwala Campus of University of the Punjab are fulfilling the needs of local population in terms of Social Sciences, Basic Sciences, Computer Sciences, Commerce and Engineering education. However, medical education, though in high demand, is not available in these institutions. Realising the inadequate facilities of medical education and quality health services, the Government of the Punjab took a historic step to revolutionise the health care facilities in Gujrat by establishing the Nawaz Sharif Medical College (NSMC) at the University of Gujrat in September 2008.

The following objectives have been set for the NSMC:

      • It will establish a system of medical counselling in wards as well as out patients departments where doctors assisted by clinical psychologists and social workers will address the relatives of the patients about nature of the disease and its prognosis.

      • There will be regular interaction with the public at least twice a week on hygienic living conditions.

      • The doctors and paramedical staff will be trained by and under the direct supervision of highly qualified faculty members through utilising state-of the-art medical equipments and most recently adopted teaching methodologies.

      • To develop a system of interaction with colleges, schools and mosques to bring public awareness about prevention of diseases.
